Today’s Sermon: Pick One Thing!

I love our Pastor, Josh Clark.  He is young (33-ish) and full of life. He is current but he is also a man for all ages, all seasons, and people.  Josh’s platform is that he is extremely human. He is also extremely willing to share his inadequacies. Like today, he told us that he weighs 210 pounds! He sure doesn’t look it but that was cool that he share it!

Josh also shared that for the New Year he feels that we should all pick ONE THING to work on.  Our pastor wants to work on contentment. Good One!  He admitted that it is not easy.  He has picked a big frog to eat each day.  Next he asked us to pick our one thing. What  should take a front seat in our lives!  He asked us to search our hearts as it should be what God wants for us as well.  On the stage next to Josh’s podium were three huge letters made of wood and painted white, they were the letters: N E W. We were asked to go up to the stage after the sermon and with the sharpie provided write down what our one thing was.  Mine came to me pretty quickly.  After the sermon I went up to the stage and wrote “stay the course”.

“Stay the course!”  I could have also written “finish what you start” or “don’t quit”. I feel like these words cover and apply to so much.  Imagine if I stayed the course every day this year and drank all my water every day, ate only whole foods and in the right portions, did just the right balance of cardio/weight training and drank my meal replacement shake every day (well this  one I have done now for 2 years straight). Anyway, you get the idea, pick reasonable goals and STAY THE COURSE!  So that is my plan for this year. I will let you know how it goes. How about you? What is your one thing? Beachbody Super Saturday, It’s Right Here Baby!

Yes! It’s January, I love this month! All the world is finally on this page, the fit page.  It is so much easier to go with the flow than it is to go against the grain.  Beachbody knows this!

That is why they scheduled our Super Saturday Event now. They know they will have everyone’s rapt attention. This event will take place at my home and I’m super excited! We will have product sampling (starring the best meal replacement shake on the planet) and we will offer a chance to do a little P90X2, we will make some exciting company announcements and the Beachbody Coach Opportunity will be presented. 

What a great year is ahead for those of us with Beachbody. The new flavor of Shakeology is coming out ( a meal replacement shake called “Tropical Strawberry”)  the next trip is going to be announced ( I can tell you…it’s Disney World!, oh I cannot wait!)  and all the new products will be previewed.  They include: Les Mills Pump (doing it right now and I am so sore) A Ti Chi Program called Ti Chang designed for people recvering form injury, those in rehab and/or those who need a slower start a program called Ultimate Reset (it’s like a 21 day cleanse) and they even have a new pre-workout drink for long lasting energy.  They are also offering a P90X Certification, that will be cool!

So glad I’m a Beachbody Coach. The world needs us! The world is getting fatter and we have the tools to help End This Trend.  Let’s go Beachbody!

Ready for 2012?

So 2011 will be gone like a breath of Heaven as we delve into 2012. I can feel the anticipation for 2012 in the air like never before and I can feel that people are really wanting to change. This year they’re not even calling it New Year’s resolutions. They’re just saying going to change. That’s exciting! As a Beachbody Coach I look for people that are ready to change. That is the key ingredient for success!

I know that I am ready for a change. I received my Les Mills Pump workout program in the mail today. It came in four boxes, two big and two small . What a cool program! I love the instructors. They are Australian and I have to say, I love the way they talk! The music on the program is very motivating. The program itself is not too tough but I think tomorrow I’m going to be sore. Even though the program was just 20 min.

The timing is perfect. I can envision myself doing the entire Les Mills Program and seeing significant change in my body by March. March is my goal because I am going to the Bahamas with the other Beachbody Coaches and I am going to be staying at the Reef which is a serious upgrade for those of us that had a certain point total. All of my fellow Beachbody Coaches are going to be in fabulous shape so there really is a lot of motivation to change. How I want to change is what I really need to zone in on.

I have been reading Chalene Johnson’s new book PUSH. In it she states that we should list 10 new goals per day! Wow sounds like a lot. Chalene is also very big on to-do lists. I am honing in and getting prepped for the new year. Are you?

2012: A New Meal Replacement Shake And So Much More!

The New Year IS upon us and I can feel it. You know why? Because Beachbody is launching all of its new products for our “after the holidays redemption”.  Yippee!!  Here is a sneak peek of what they is coming our way.

P90X2!  We all know about P90X and most of us have done it! Now we can move on to and into P90X2.  I received mine in the mail last week and have already done Plyocide. P90X2 is a beautifully constructed, fun and constructive workout. It is not for someone just getting into fitness.  Tony Horton knows what he is doing but if you are new to fitness please start with Power 90 then go to P90X and finally P90X2. Many an “after” have followed this progression.

Les Mills Pump!  Oh I cannot wait for this program.  It promises to burn off 1000 holiday calories in one session.  It is fast paced and high energy! The kit comes with weight discs, steps and music that will keep you flyin’. You can control the level of the workout by how much weight you put on your bar.  Do this program all the way through and you will transform your entire body!

Tai Cheng!  This is a Tai Chi Program put together by one of Beachbody’s finest Dr. Mark Cheng. This a program aimed at those who are either in their Senior years, going through rehab or for someone that has a lot of aches and pains.  From the promo, it appears to be beautifully crafted and will be a joy to par take in.

Tropical Strawberry Shakeology! Coaches from across the world got to sample Tropical Shakeology at the last Beachbody Summit in Los Angeles. We have all been chomping at the bit ever since. It is the most beautiful shade of soft pink and the flavor was like a cherry -pomegranate combo. Delightful!  People will be banging down our doors for this meal replacement shake!

Stop That Age Train! Exercise!

I have always known and have always promoted the fact that exercise slows down the aging process, but this weekend that old adage became new again. In fact, it presented itself to me in full living color!  My family had the opportunity to hear Fitness Guru, Beachbody Star and P90X Giant Tony Horton speak.  He was appearing at my daughter’s college Azusa Pacific University, too fun! From 1 p.m. we got to hear Tony speak and then from 2:30 to 4 we got to workout with him!  It was an exhilirating and exhausting day!

I think that Tony Horton is the best.  He is funny and full of energy and of course fit. This weekend I learned he was so much more.  Tony is a man completely committed to his craft.  He has created a unique health and fitness “Bible” called, the 11 laws of fitness. The ideas are basic but so valuable! 

Here is a brief run down of the TH Laws For Fitness: 1) variety- change it up so your body doesn’t become bored!  2) consistency: to succeed at anything you must do it consistently over time! 3) Intensity: don’t risk getting nothing out of exercising by not working hard enough! 4) Purpose: WHY are you exercising? to lose weight, have more energy, more flexibility? Revisit your why every morning! 5) Reality: live as you really are, forget the past and don’t worry about the future. Wake up, get up, and be you! 6) Sports: Get into the game of life! Kayak, Ski, play beach volley ball, swim, ice skate, ride that bike! Take advantage of all the world has to offer you! 7) The Plan: Plan it and you will do it, wing it and you won’t! Create accountability! 8) Stress and Sleep: Stress destroys, sleep heals! Think enough of your life and what you are trying to accomplish to give your self 7- to 8.5 hours of sleep. 9) Loving It! The best exercise is the one you will do! Pick something that you love. It should make you feel great before during and after, otherwise you won’t do it! 10) Flexibility: this is the fountain of youth.  You need to be flexible so that you won’t get injured.  Flexibility will allow you to move in the functional world with grace and you will enjoy everything you do! 11) Food Supplements: Tony Horton loves Shakeology. This is the only meal replacement shake he has put his stamp of approval on. He feels it is a delicious, easy and so nutritious solution in our depraved food culture.  Tony believes in one-ingredient foods, you know them: apples, carrots, salmon, eggs. You get the idea. What a simple approach to nutrition!

So at 53 Tony Horton is doing handstands and has a better body than most college athletes. Jane Fonda (who I just saw on the Today Show) is 73! Guess what she was talking about in her interview? You guessed it! Exercise!  Jane told Matt Lauer that she was astounded when she did some research about the correlation between exercise and aging well.

You can’t talk me out of it, I am a lifer! And with all the benefits of exercise I am a LONG LIFER at that!

How To Make Your Holidays Happy and Healthy!

Three days until Thanksgiving and we can call ourselves deep within the holiday season.  Are you feeling happy? Healthy?  Ironically enough during this “most wonderful time of the year” we are often not happy and very often not healthy.  What can be done? Let’s take a look!

Every Saturday morning I have the pleasure of meeting with the ladies from my Body Gospel Challenge Group.  This last Saturday we brainstormed  about getting through Thanksgiving and through the holidays in general.  This is what we came up with.

1) Exercise every day no matter what.

2) Don’t be a perfectionist (so that you are less likely to stress eat)

3) Buy and prepare foods that are not your favorite (you are not likely to binge eat)

4) Delegate duties, especially ones centered around food prep.

5) Focus, really focus on the people around you and what a gift they are

6) Find the humor in any awkward situation. We do not laugh enough!

7) Never forget to drink in your meal replacement shake.  Flood your body with nutrients and do it with minimal calories. The meal replacement shake will also curb your cravings for sweets.

8) Get enough rest. You will be more efficient during your waking hours and less cranky!

9) Develop a craving for helping others and being kind to them.  Zero calories and no food hang over with this craving!

10) Keep focused on the new year. The better you take care of yourself now, the better your chance for taking complete hold of your health in 2012.

Here’s to a Happy AND Healthy New Year!

 

The Colonoscopy, do you love it?

Chances are you saw the title and said “no I do not love the colonoscopy, I hate it!”  That is how I felt when I turned fifty and realized that I would have to go in for my colonoscopy. What was good about this? I would have to slug down a ton of water accompanied by gigantic white horse pills that would cause me to “go” and “go” and “go”!  I would be house bound and I would have stomach cramping and I wouldn’t be able to eat. I wouldn’t even be able to enjoy my meal replacement shake!  I hate this! Then I would have to go to a sterile clinic where I wouldn’t be special and I would have to endure an IV and be very groggy while a tube invaded me in parts of my anatomy that are not used to being invaded.  On top of all that, I would be down for the rest of the day, not able to drive, I would just need to rest and I am not sick!  Not to mention the inconvenience! I have things to do, calls to make and people to see!  How could this be worth it!

Well, that is what I am hear to tell you.  Getting a colonoscopy when you turn fifty (or before if your doctor recommends) is one of the most worthwhile ways you can spend your time. Why? Because it will save your life!  A couple of years ago a friend of my daughter’s mother died of colon cancer.  She would be alive today if she had simply gone in for her routine colonoscopy.  Colon cancer is different from other cancers in that when you remove the polyup (s) , you have removed the cancer or threat of cancer, period.

When I went for my colonoscopy, I did have polyups, but by the time I woke up they were history, my life was saved!  And to be honest, the procedure was not that bad. I went into a lovely twilight sleep, nothing hurt or was even uncomfortable and I felt fine afterwards.  I came home hungry and simply flooded my body with the nutrition of Shakeology and all was well!

If you are fifty, please go for your colonoscopy.  You are guaranteed not to die for colon cancer if you do. Quite a deal for something that only takes a days time. Gotta love that!

Soups On!

“End of October the sleepy brown woods seem to bow down their heads to the winter, yellow and gray paint the sad skies today and I wonder when you’re coming home” This is an favorite old song of mine from the 70′s by Dan Fogelburg. It always pops into my head at this time of year when “the weather” is upon us and we are starting to hunker down for the colder months. Another thing pops into my head as well and it’s… soup!  There is nothing like a cold wet day and soup!

Soup today is widely available in many flavors and styles. Soup can be full fat and calorie loaded (such as Fresh N Easy’s Clam Chowder~ 1000 calories per serving) or it can be light, fat free and low calorie.  Both are filling but one type will fill you up but not out. I choose up and not out!

My favorite new soup is Amy’s Organic Black Bean Vegetable. It is 140 calories with 5 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein and 0 grams saturated fat.  It is naturally high in vitamin A and C and Fooducate gives it a solid B. Another choice I love from Amy’s is the Chunky Tomato Bisque.  It is 130 calories (per serving, always check servings size) and also carries a goodly amount of vitamin A and C.

Moving on to soups that are really dieter friendly, we have ones made by Weight Watchers, Select Harvest, and Progresso.  Choose soups that are broth based like Italian Wedding Style or Vegetable Medley.  Be a label reader and look at the sodium content of these soups, it can often be too high.

Get creative and make your own soup using a base of chicken broth.  Add black beans, chicken breast and veggies, yum!  Have it cooking when the kids come home from school. This is a wonderful after-school snack on a blustery day. Filling, low or no sugar and nutritious too!

Some days when I don’t feel like eating much or if I have over-indulged the day before, I will have a soup and meal replacement shake day. It gives my digestive track a rest and makes me feel like I am cleansed and back on track.

Just like the Campbell’s Soup jingle says “that’s why having soup is mmm mmmm good!” Is it lunch time yet?

Long May You Run and May You Always Be Young!

We are so proud of my husband Les’s brother Cris as this very morning he is running in the New York City Marathon.  Cris has run in many marathons before and has always done well in his age group.  He was particularly excited this year as he is 58 and still runs a very good time.

I admire Cris in so many ways. He is a devoted son, wonderful husband, amazing father and now a doting grandfather.  Cris also is an extremely hard working business man and loved by all who encounter him in and out of the business world.  Good thing that Cris has such a strong work ethic because if he didn’t, he would not be alive to run in this marathon. Let me explain.

Although Cris has always run and been active, always been lean and always eaten healthfully, he still has had startlingly high cholesterol. In fact it has been over 300 at times. Through paring his diet down to like no fat and through the use of statin medications, Cris was able to bring his numbers down to the 140 range. Quite a feat! However, after a time Cris was starting to experience major side effects from the drugs and decided to try life without them. Unfortunately that didn’t work out too well. After a short period of time Cris’s cholesterol numbers started to climb back up. The thought of going back on the meds was not something Cris wanted to consider.

The Beachbody Challenge Is On!

OK, after much anticipation, The Beachbody Challenge is on! This new way of Coaching was introduced to us at The Success Club Leadership Conference which was held in Laguna Beach, California last month. As soon as I heard about it I knew that this was a brilliant idea, one that would change the face of Beachbody Coaching forever.

Here is how it works. As a Beachbody Coach, I invite 5 people to be in my Challenge Group. Beachbody felt that 5 people per challenge was the right size. This way the coach can keep track of each participant and no one gets lost in the process. The idea is that the small group will bond and support one another. Once the group is formed, a particular workout is chosen for all in the group to do (sometimes the workout is chosen in advance and people join based on that choice). Each member of the challenge will drink Shakeology (our delicious and so healthy meal replacement shake) daily. These groups will check in daily with one another. Enter modern technology! The groups keeps in touch on a private Facebook Page. Amazing! In beta-testing it was concluded that this accountability piece was key to the progress of the group. On the Facebook Page, we create a relationships through posting photos of our life, asking the group questions and of course supporting one another through the trials and tribulations of this fitness journey.

I absolutley LOVE this concept. It WILL be a game changer. We all need one another to share this endeavor with as it is NOT easy. We also as humans, thrive on accountability and kudos. My first group begins on November 12 and we are going to bring it and kill it right on through the holidays!

Quick Grab That Meal Replacement Shake and Save Yourself Thousands of Halloween and Holiday Calories!

OK we are right now on the 10 day count down to that scary holiday Halloween!  Fore-warned is fore-armed so let’s start now and get prepared!  We do not have to go into a sugar-coma with a food hang-over the next day. We do not have to call this the beginning of the end of holiday food frenzy.  We can make this holiday season fun and not a food fight.

My first recomendation is to find a deeply healthy meal replacement shake.  The reasons are 1) You will need something quick during the holidays as you have no time.  2) You need something nutrient dense to keep you feeling powerful and energetic 3) You need something naturally sweet, something that will take away your cravings from all the sugary substances that will be coming at you.

Halloween morning is a morning to burn baby burn, exercise your socks off! Before you go out on Halloween Night, fill up on veggies and water. Be full and be fabulous! Do have a planned sweet. Dum dum lollipops, and bite size chocolates are both good choices.  When all is said and done, have a rule with your kids like: they can have 1 treat per evening for 2 weeks. Now count out 14 pieces for each child and throw the rest away!  That’s when you will know that you have survived Halloween!

Now you have about 27 days until you are faced with a difficult meal, that being Thanksgiving.  Load up on the turkey and green beans and take a walk that day! The rest of the holidays is about this: exercising every day, drinking lots of water and having that healthy meal replacement shake. Also rest and do not try to do too much, that is what will drive you eat a dozen or more Christmas Cookies that get left at your door.

January will come, as it does every year, and how will you feel?  Will you wake up with too much junk in your trunk? Or will you rise and shine to what you know could be the best year of your life? The choice is yours to make and the time is now to make it, 10 days before Halloween!  Let’s do this people, let’s savor the sweet SMELL of success!  Nothing is sweeter than that!
